🧠 Lecture: “The True Cost of Chocolate: Origins, Ethics & Craft”
🎤 Speaker: Educator, Ruth Kennison
Join us for an eye-opening evening as chocolatier and chocolate educator Ruth Kennison uncovers the real story behind your favorite treat. Far from the Swiss Alps and Belgian confectioners, chocolate’s roots lie in sacred Mayan rituals and, today, in West African and Latin American farms where children labor for pennies while global corporations profit.
Ruth will trace chocolate’s evolution from ancient currency to a $100 billion industry built on exploitation, revealing how centuries of colonialism, modern-day slavery, and environmental destruction are hidden in that $2 candy bar.
But there is another path. Discover the bean-to-bar revolutionaries paying farmers living wages, preserving rare cacao, and proving that when chocolate costs what it should, everyone wins: farmers, makers, the planet—and your palate. You’ll learn why a $15 or $20 bar isn’t a luxury, but the beginning of justice, and you’ll taste the extraordinary difference that ethics and craft can make.
Ruth Kennison is an internationally recognized chocolatier, educator, and chocolate authority whose sold-out classes and global experience bring the world of fine chocolate vividly to life.
