Join Professor Alissa S. Crans for a lively, hands-on journey into the world of tessellations and the century-old quest to find all 5-sided tiles that perfectly cover the plane. You’ll explore recent breakthroughs, including the astonishing 2023 discovery of the “hat tiling,” a pattern that goes on forever without ever repeating.
Nationally recognized for her energetic and accessible approach to mathematics, Professor Crans shares the joy of math everywhere from public libraries and Nerd Nite Los Angeles to the National Math Festival and the National Museum of Mathematics. At Loyola Marymount University, she is devoted to broadening participation in mathematics, especially among women and underrepresented students.
